Fifty years ago, Christian philosopher and apologist Alvin Plantinga sparked a renewed vigor in theistic philosophy by pointing out how we believe other people are not just bodies, but minds – we treat them like they think and feel, but cannot prove they are separate from us. Take this thought and look at Genesis 1: the birds and fish and animals are all commissioned to fill the Earth, just as man and woman are made. Hmmmmmm…enter Josh Plotnik, an animal psychologist, and his several-thousand-pound patients. According to Josh’s research, it’s not only humans that can see others and discern their own place in the world; elephants can, too. Can elephants worship? Maybe…but what it does seem to suggest is that God isn’t so far off after all.
