What Matters?

What matters? What really matters? Do you know always or do you have to be reminded constantly. It seems that the revelation, the epiphany, comes when we least expect it. It arrives on our doorstep at the most peaceful and the most chaotic of moments. Are you able to open your eyes and see it and are you able to open your heart and let it in. No matter what is going on in your life right now, joy or pain, God is waiting to reveal to you the things that matter most. Watch and listen and you will find them.

Does it matter where?
Does it ever really matter?
It is final,
No matter where it takes place,
No matter when it comes.

One might meet it
In a small house
On Martha’s Vineyard,
Beneath summer-blue skies,
As small breezes pass over
Softly on their way out to sea.

One might encounter it
Suddenly, violently,
On some inner city street,
Alone, save for the sound
Of fleeing footfalls in the night.

Some might welcome the encounter
After a long, tortured struggle,
Surrounded by family
Softly whispering prayers
And stroking their feverish brow.

It does not matter.
It does not matter when,
Or where it arrives.

What matters
Is what you take with you
Beyond its coming.
