When Does Jesus Get Here?
A new family came into the small church and sat down in the very last pew. As the family with small children settled in and sang hymns and listened to the announcements, a young girl asked her mother, “When does Jesus get her?” What a hilarious moment but what a great question. When does Jesus get here?
On Monday morning, a co-worker friend of mine who was having a very difficult day and who also happens to be a believer said, “Even so Lord, come quickly.“ That is every Christian’s desire, to see the day of His return. What a joyous day that will be. We all wait with eager expectation and await the day that Jesus will say to us, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness” (Matt 25:21). In the day to day grind of work and life, we may feel like we just can’t go on any longer, but every day is one day closer to that Great Day of His return. That might be today, it could come tonight, or it could come, dare we hope…on a Monday morning? Until that Day comes, I like to think about what Jonathan Edwards once wrote, “Why should we labor for or set our hearts on anything else, but that which is our proper end and true happiness?” Of course he was talking about heaven.
I would have liked to say to this young child in church who asked when Jesus would get here, “Child, He is already here.”
“Have you never read, “‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise’?” Matthew 21:16
